The day of 2nd October might be the day where one of the national icons in the world was born in Mahatma Gandhi, but it was also the day where Srilanka had destroyed Pakistan’s hope in the first test at Abhu Dhabi where it was also the day Sri Lankan legendary spinner Rangana Herath got his 400th Test wicket as well. This was one of the best Test matches between the biggest Asian rivals in cricket.
This was truly a Test match that belonged to Rangana Herath who was one of the best off spinners the Island nation ever produced who finished his Test career with 433 wickets in 93 Test matches and bowled some brilliant spells for his team. The day he got his 400th wicket was probably one of the best Test matches he featured in and he had one of his best performances.
How did the match go down?
The first innings saw Sri Lanka put up a big total of 419 against the Pakistan team and put them under pressure. However Pakistan fought valiantly in their first innings with knocks from Azhar and Haris Sohail but in the end could only manage a lead of 3 runs thanks to a spell from Rangana Herath who took 5/93. Sri Lanka looked in trouble as they got bundled out for 138 giving the Pakistani’s a target of just 136.
This should have been an easy chase for them but then it was the wrath of Herath that came to bite them as the veteran came back with another great spell taking 6/43 in 21.3 overs. Herath also took the last wicket and
made sure the Lankans won by a margin of 21 runs and got them bowled out for just 114 in the end. Herath not only completed the 400 wicket milestone but also went onto get the man of the match for his match winning spell in both the innings ending with 11 wickets in the match.
