On This Day | Perth Scorchers created history by winning their third Big Bash League Title in 2017. Perth Scorchers are synonymous with domination in the BBL. They have traditionally been the most successful team in the history of BBL with 5 titles to their name. On this day in 2017, Perth Scorchers won their third title by defeating Sydney Sixers in the final at their home ground.
First innings
Similar to the 2014-15 final, Sydney Sixers batted first in the summit clash but this time they were put to bat by the opposition. Perth Scorchers proved their decision right by getting early breakthroughs to unsettle Sydney Sixers. In the powerplay, Sydney lost three important wickets, Daniel Hughes, Nic Maddinson, and Michael Lumb, which put them in a spot of bother.
Brad Haddin and Moises Henriques stitched a small partnership to rescue Sydney Sixers but their partnership could not last long. Once Haddin was dismissed, the fall of wickets started again as Perth gave quick setbacks to Sydney. In the end, the side batting first ended up with 141 runs courtesy of a crucial cameo from Johan Botha.
Second Innings
Having restricted Sydney Sixers to a low total in the first innings, Perth Scorchers were in the pole position. The openers, Sam Whiteman and Michael Klinger provided a solid start to their team. The duo added 75 runs in the first eight overs which made it very difficult for Sydney Sixers to make a comeback into the contest. Michael Klinger carried on the onslaught to ensure that Perth Scorchers did not lose the momentum. Ian Bell assisted Klinger with the same intent and guided the team beyond the finishing line.
Perth Scorchers completed the run chase with four overs to spare and 9 wickets in hand. It was a comprehensive victory for Perth as they completed the chase without much trouble and created history by winning the title for the third time. Jhye Richardson won the player of the match award for his 3 wickets in the first innings.
