The 2004 Under-19 World Cup saw some of the most promising players take part in the tournament. India had the likes of Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Shikhar Dhwan, Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, and Irfan Pathan in their line-up. The tournament which was played in Bangladesh saw sixteen teams take part in 54 matches. 

There were four groups with top two sides from each pool making it to the Super League while other teams will play the Plate league. Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, England, South Africa, India, New Zealand, West Indies, and Pakistan made it through to the Super League matches. As per the rules of the tournament, the top two sides in each Super League pool will qualify for the semi finals. 

India and West Indies made it through to the Semi Finals while Pakistan and England qualified from their group. In the first Semi-finals, India were beaten by Pakistan in a low scoring contest to bring their tournament to an end. England were outplayed by West Indies by 94 runs as Pakistan and West Indies set up an exciting finale. 

Pakistan claim first Under-19 World Cup title win 

It was Pakistan who won the toss and skipper Khalid Latif didn’t hesitate to bat first. Pakistan could score only 230 for the loss of nine wickets from their 50 overs. Opening batter Adnan Zaheer and skipper Khalid Latif added 53 for the first wicket in 12 over before Zaheer was out for 33 while Latif perished for 20. 

Jahangir Mirza and Tariq Mahmood were out after scoring just 10 and 11 runs each. Asif Iqbal and Sulaiman Qadir then added 97 runs for the fifth wicket to help their side go near 200. Iqbal was the top scorer with 54 while Mahmood scored 42 runs, Rishi Bachan was the best bowler for West Indies with figures of 3/34 from his ten overs. 

Chasing 231 to win, West Indies were bowled out for 205 with 17 balls left to play. Skipper Dinesh Ramdin with 36 and Tishan Maraj with 32 were the best batter for the West Indian side. Ravi Rampaul then smashed an unbeaten 24 off 19 to keep his team in the hunt which went futile. For Pakistan the best bowler was Tariq Mahmood who picked three wickets while Jahangir Mirza got two wickets. Shikhar Dhawan was named player of the series for his 505 runs in the tournament.
