Turning the clock 47 years back exactly on this day in 1977, a historic day was marked for the Pakistan Cricket Team in their cricketing history. It was the 18th January of 1977 when Mushtaq Mohammad-led Pakistan registered the first win against Australia in the history of Pakistan cricket.
Both teams played this match at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, from January 14 1977. The then-Aussie skipper Greg Chappel won the toss and decided to bat first. The lethal pace duo of Imran Khan and Sarfraz Nawaz scalped a combined total of 9 wickets. Sarfraz scalped 3 wickets while Imran bagged 6 wickets to his name, alongside one wicket claimed by Javed Miandad.
On the back of these bowling performances, Pakistan bundled out Australia at the score of 211 runs in the first innings. In response to Australia’s first-innings total of 211 runs, Pakistan managed to put a total of 360 runs on the board in the first innings, taking a lead of 149 runs, thanks to the 120-run knock played by Asif Iqbal. Besides Asif, Haroon Rasheed and Javed Miandad also added 57 and 64 runs, respectively.
Lethal pace duo of Sarfraz Nawaz and Imran Khan dominated Aussies in a convincing style
Later in the second innings, the dangerous pace duo of Sarfraz Nawaz and Imran Khan once again ripped off the Australian batting lineup, replicating their first-innings performances with the same number of wickets. Nawaz and Khan scalped 3 and 6 wickets, respectively in the second innings as well. Riding on these performances, Pakistan wrapped Australia at the score of 180 runs in the second innings; the hosts could register a minor lead of only 31 runs, posting a 32-run target for Pakistan to win the match.
While chasing the target, the visitors comfortably crossed the line and chased down the total in 7.2 overs in the second innings, scoring 32 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. Eventually, Pakistan won the match by 8 wickets and registered their first-ever win against Australia in Australia.
