OTD | One of the finest batters of all time, Allan Border turns 68

Gideon Haigh once referred to Australia legend Allan Border as “The man who stood by Australia,” and for good reason. Border, who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, is celebrating his 68th birthday today. Border’s remarkable career in Test and ODI cricket has left an indelible mark in the history of the game. So, today we will celebrate his amazing career.

In Test cricket, Allan Border played 156 matches, amassing a staggering 11,174 runs with 27 centuries and 63 half-centuries, all at an impressive average of 50.56. Not just a batting maestro, he also contributed as a bowler, claiming 39 wickets. Border’s away performances were nothing short of exceptional. While most batsmen tend to excel at home, Border’s overseas numbers were astonishing. 

In 70 Tests abroad, he amassed 5,431 runs at a staggering average of 56.57, proving his mettle in every cricketing nation. His overseas average remains the highest among all batsmen who have scored over 5,000 runs away from home. Meanwhile, in ODIs, Border appeared in 273 matches, scoring 6,524 runs, including three centuries and 39 half-centuries. As a bowler in the limited-overs format, he also impressed, taking 73 wickets. 

Allan Border has some unmatched records 

Beyond his exceptional batting skills, Border’s ability as a bowler was often underrated. One of his most memorable performances came in 1988–89, during a Test against the formidable West Indies at the SCG. With the West Indies cruising at 144 for 1, Border stepped up and ran through their batting lineup, finishing with outstanding figures of 7 for 46. This is the second-best bowling performance by an Australian skipper in Test Cricket. Furthermore, Border remains the only Australian captain to have taken a ten-wicket haul in a Test match—an incredible achievement for an all-rounder of his caliber
With the bat, one of his most memorable performances came during the 1979–80 tour of Pakistan. Border showcased his sheer determination and skill by scoring 150 and 153 in the same Test match. This remarkable feat remains unparalleled to this day, with no other batsman achieving two 150s in a single Test.
