OTD | Majid Khan became only the fourth man to make a hundred before lunch on the first day of a Test in 1976

A player must have an enormous cricketing history if they had father Jahangir Khan, who played for India during British control, and relatives like Imran Khan and Javed Burki. He drove cleanly between the covers and down the ground that October morning in Karachi, the bat gently guiding the ball between the fielders without pushing it. And he hooked with a haughtiness that is rarely seen in the subcontinent when Hadlee, Collinge, and Cairns bounced. 

In the series’ third Test match against New Zealand, Majid Khan and Sadiq Mohammad opened the batting after captain Mushtaq Mohammad won the toss and decided to bat first. Richard Collinge, Lance Cairns, and Richard Hadlee were among the Kiwi bowling unit members that Majid Khan amassed 108 runs by lunchtime on the first day. Pakistan managed to score 565 runs as Javed Miandad scored 206 runs and captain Mushtaq Mohammad scored 100 runs knock.

In the first session, he scored two perfectly timed sixes that imprinted his panache, and eighteen boundaries left flame trails over the ground. After Bradman’s 1930 Headingley achievement, Majid achieved the first century before lunch on the opening day of a Test match, finishing undefeated at 108 at the half.

During the second innings again, Javed Miandad was in charge and scored 85 runs as Pakistan managed to score 290 before declaring the innings. However, the match ended in a draw but New Zealand lost seven wickets while chasing the target. 

After Pakistan drew the Test and clinched the series victory 2-0, he was eventually out for 112 runs. He became the fourth batter in test cricket to score a century before lunch on the first day of the match between New Zealand and Pakistan. The fact that Majid Khan scored Pakistan’s maiden ODI century at Trent Bridge in 1974 is another notable accomplishment.
