OTD | Jonathan Trott scored a century on his Test debut against Australia in 2009 

Jonathan Trott made his debut for England during the 2009 Ashes series at the iconic Oval Stadium. The hosts won the game and also went on to win the Ashes series as Stuart Broad wreaked havoc with the ball. While Trott made his debut it was also the final game in England colors for Andrew Flintoff. 

By the end of his Test career, Trott had played 52 matches and scored 3835 runs with a best of 226. The right-handed batter also hit 9 centuries and 19 fifties with an average of 44 before ending his Test career. 

England batted first and scored 332 on the board with Ian Bell scoring 72 while skipper Andrew Strauss was out for 55. Johnathan Trott scored 41 runs from 81 balls while batting at number 5. 

Australia in their first innings managed to score just 160 on the board as Stuart Broad picked 5/37. This gave the home team a massive lead of 172 runs as Simon Katich with 50 and Shane Watson with 34 were the best batters for the visiting side. 

Jonathan Trott makes his presence felt 

Australian bowlers came back with a vengeance as they reduced the hosts to 39/3 in the 18th over. Marcus North first dismissed Alastair Cook for 9 while Mitchell Johnson got the wickets of Ian Bell for 4 and Paul Collingwood for 1. 

This is when Trott joined skipper Strauss as the pair added 118 runs for the 4th wicket in 37 overs. Marcus North then got the breakthrough when he dismissed Andrew Strauss for 75 runs from 191 balls with 8 hits to the fence. Matt Prior was soon run out for 4 but Trott carried on as he blunted out the Aussie bowling unit. 

Andrew Flintoff, playing his final innings, scored 22 off 18 balls before falling to North. The century for Trott came against the run of play as the massive crowd at Oval stood up to applaud the debutant. 

Set a target of 546 to win, Australia collapsed to 348 as they lost by a massive 197. Michael Hussey was the best batter for the visiting side as he hit 121 off 263 balls and skipper Ricky Ponting scored 66 off 103 balls.
