OTD | Javed Miandad completed a hundred in his 100th Test in 1989

On this day in 1989, Javed Miandad scored a hundred on his 100th Test, a feat achieved by only a few batters. It came against India at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on the third and last Test of the series. It was the same series where legends like Waqar Younis and Sachin Tendulkar made their international debut for Pakistan and India respectively.

It was a flat deck in Lahore and gaining a result seemed nearly impossible. Hence, both sides decided to bat as much as possible and tire out the bowlers. India batted first and scored 509 runs on the board. They took 178.2 overs and over two days to do so. Sanjay Manjrekar was the pick of the batters who scored 218(401). He was assisted by Mohammad Azharuddin and Ravi Shastri’s 77 and 61.

In reply to it, Pakistan batted 203.4 overs and posted 699/5. Only one batter, Abdul Qadir, failed to get a fifty for Pakistan in the innings. Even he stayed unbeaten with 39*(35). The star of the show was Sohaib Mohammed who remained unbeaten with a score of 203*(338). Likewise, three Pakistani batters managed to score individual fifties.

While Ramiz Raja scored 63(110), Saleem Malik and Imran Khan scored 55(94) and 66(94) respectively. Aamer Malik batted well and scored a hundred for himself. The Pakistani opener managed to score 113 runs in 273 balls. But the highlight of the match was Javed scoring a hundred in his 100th Test match. He batted well in the middle.

The right-handed batter scored 145 runs in 289 balls which included 10 fours and a lot of running between the wickets. Indian bowlers tried their best to challenge the home side but in vain. In the end, the match ended in a boring draw. Manjrekar bagged the Player of the Match award for his 218 against a quality bowling lineup. But it will be remembered for Javed’s milestone.
