OTD| India's greatest skipper MS Dhoni unexpectedly announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020

Former India skipper MS Dhoni is one of the most successful Indian captains. Talking about the World Events, the Men In Blue won three different titles from 2007 to 2013 (T20 World Cup 2007, ODI World Cup 2011, and Champions Trophy 2013). Apart from this, the Asian side became the number Test side from late 2009 to mid-2011.

Regarded as the best finisher of the game, he is one of those players who have more than 10000 runs in ODI cricket batting mostly in the middle-order. The right-hander also averaged more than 50 after playing 350 ODIs (The 350th one being the dreaded 2019 semifinal against New Zealand). Talking about Test, the Ranchi-born was 10 short of 100 games before announcing his retirement.

After his Test retirement in late 2014, he continued to polay white-ball cricket and handed over the captaincy to Virat Kohli just like the former did in Tests. Meanwhile, on this day in 2020, Dhoni announced his retirement. While the world was reeling under the COVID-19 pandemic, India completed another year of independence from draconian British Raj.

Little did they know that the 42-year-old will bid adieu to the game at the highest level. At the end of the Day (Before 7 PM Approx), the wicketkeeper batter posted a montage on social media and declared that after 7:29 PM, he will retire as an international cricketer.

However, he continues to play in the IPL. After the 2019 semifinal, the Chennai Super Kings skipper wasn’t playing for India but didn’t announce his retirement either. The fans were hoping for his arrival. Ironically, his ODI career started after getting run-out against Bangladesh in 2004 and ended with the same mode of dismissal 15 years later.
