OTD | India’s fiery former fast bowler Javagal Srinath turns 54

OTD | India's fiery former fast bowler Javagal Srinath turns 54

The current crop of fast bowlers in India are among the world’s best pace lineup right now which consists of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammad Siraj. However, India’s bowling unit was a problem a few decades back. Previous teams, headed by MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, have taken advantage of their bowlers’ abilities to win matches. Today’s Indian cricket bowling lineup has the potential to take 20 wickets in Test matches, which is a big improvement over prior eras when they relied heavily on one or two exceptional bowlers or the spin bowlers to win them the matches.

The former India speedster also known as the “Mysore Express,” emerged as a rare gem in a time when India struggled to produce consistent fast bowlers. Making his debut in 1991 against Pakistan, Srinath marked the era as India’s first true fast bowler. Notably, the legendary batter clocked a delivery at 157 kmph, a milestone for Indian pace bowling at that time. Over his 67-match Test career, Srinath claimed 236 wickets, including 10 five-wicket hauls. In ODIs, he featured in 229 matches and secured 315 wickets, a record for Indian pacers that stands to this day. Srinath’s significance was magnified by his pivotal role in India’s cricket history.

Srinath also holds the record for leading wicket-taker for India in Men’s Cricket World Cups with 44 wickets to his name alongside Zaheer Khan. The former India bowler had showcased his excellence in crucial moments. Srinath was more than just a bowler, contributed with the bat as well. His unbeaten 52-run partnership with Anil Kumble against Australia in 1996 remains a cherished memory.

Srinath‘s illustrious career was tinged with one regret – the ending he deserved. In the 2003 World Cup final, India had a chance to defeat the formidable Australians and make history. Unfortunately, the victory eluded them, and Srinath retired after the loss. Currently, Srinath serves as an ICC match referee, having officiated in over 350 international matches. His journey from being India’s dependable fast bowler to a respected match official underscores his enduring influence on the cricketing world.
