On this day in 1988, Piyush Chawla was born. The leg spinner was a part of the Indian squad that won the T20 World Cup 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011. Chawla did not play a lot for India. However, he is one of the leading wicket takers in the history of the IPL. Due to the presence of better spinners, Chawla could not get as many chances in the Indian team as he would have liked.

Piyush is someone who can spin the ball both ways. Leg spinner is his stock delivery and Piyush also has a good googly. He is one of the orthodox leg spinners with a simple action and a low pace. Chawla can also bat a bit lower down the order. He has decent stats as a batter in First Class Cricket. He is one of the unluckiest cricketers in Indian cricket.

Chawla played 3 Tests, 25 ODIs, and 7 T20Is for India. The talented spinner took 7, 32, and 4 wickets in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is respectively. He made his Test debut against England in 2006. Chawla made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2007. His T20I debut happened against South Africa in 2010. He played his last match for India in 2012 and never got a chance again.

The best performances of Piyush Chawla have come in the Indian Premier League. He has played 192 matches in the league so far with as many wickets to his name at a bowling average of 26.60, at a bowling SR of 20.05, at an economy rate of 7.96 with best bowling figures of 4/17 to his name. Piyush has represented teams like Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, and Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

In the biggest cricket league, he was useful as a batter as well. Chawla scored 624 runs in 192 innings at an average of 11.14. Chawla played a key role for KKR when they won the IPL in 2014. He claimed 14 wickets at a bowling average of 21.64 and a bowling SR of 16.93 in the season. Even as a batter, he played some useful cameos and won the final.
