Team India captain and Mumbai Indians (MI) talisman Rohit Sharma turned 37 on Tuesday, April 30. Known for his power-hitting, Rohit is fondly called ‘Hitman’ by his beloved fans. He has never failed to mesmerize the crowd with his scintillating shots irrespective of the formats. While being a nightmare for the opposition, he has been a pillar of the Indian cricket team for years.
Born into a middle-class family in 1987, Rohit Gurunath Sharma made his senior men’s team debut in 2007. Although there were some hiccups in his early career, it was only a matter of time before he evolved into one of the finest batters of his generation. Rohit started his journey as a middle-order batter and in 2013, former India captain MS Dhoni’s revolutionary move brought him to the opening slot.
This decision was due to the lack of contenders for the opener’s position in ODIs, and it paid huge dividends for the Men in Blue. Since then, Rohit has made huge strides in his career and emerged as one of the greatest opening batters of all time. He holds numerous world records in international cricket, some of which are unlikely to be broken in the near future.
Rohit – A captain who shapes his team’s fate
No matter how much Rohit’s batting is praised, his captaincy also deserves attention. With Mumbai Indians (MI) struggling to get going under legendary Ricky Ponting, the management handed the baton to Rohi and the rest is history. He led MI to glory in his captaincy debut year and went on to win another four over the next 10 years.
If defending low totals was an art, Rohit was a master at it. In the ongoing 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), we are witnessing the batters completely dominating the bowlers to post humongous totals on the board. But the excitement and experience of a low-scoring thriller is another level, and that’s what we’re missing now.
Rohit is regarded as one of the most successful captains in the history of IPL. His heroics in the cash-rich league earned him the opportunity to lead the national team. He has led India tremendously well in the 2023 ODI World Cup, but lost to Australia in the final. Currently playing as a pure batter for MI with Hardik Pandya taking over the reins, Rohit will aim to end India’s major international title drought in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
