OTD | India won their eighth consecutive World Cup game in a row by beating South Africa in Kolkata in ODI World Cup 2023

On this day in 2023, the world witnessed history as Virat Kohli equalled the record of Sachin Tendulkar for the highest number of ODI hundreds. On a tricky pitch, Virat anchored the innings well and helped India to get to a total of 326/5 on the board. The bowlers ran through the South African batters, dismissing them for a paltry 83 and won the match by a whopping 243 runs.

India hadn’t lost a match in the ODI World Cup 2023 till the final. Their eighth win of the tournament was against SA. India batted well on a tricky surface in Eden Gardens. Rohit Sharma went berserk from his end and smashed a 24-ball 40. While Gill perished after a 23-ball 24, Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli anchored the Indian innings. Both took their time before accelerating in the middle.

Iyer played a fine knock of 77(87) before getting dismissed. After Rahul perished for a 17-ball 8, Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja finished the game well for India. It allowed Virat to play slower and get to the milestone of a record 49th hundred. His 101(121) helped India to post a massive total of 326/5 on the board. It was a bit too much on a slow surface.

South Africa never seemed to be in the run chase. A big total created a bit too much pressure on them. The Indian bowlers claimed wickets one after the other for fun. Mohammad Siraj drew the big finish Quinton De Kock. Mohammed Shami got rid of Rassie Van Ded Dussen and Aiden Markram. Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi.

But the star of the bowling was Ravindra Jadeja who got a great turn and made the batters pay with his exceptional bowling. The left-arm orthodox spinner claimed 5/33 in his 9 overs including a maiden over. SA was dismissed for a paltry total of 83 runs. India won the match by 243 runs and extended their winning streak to 8 wins on a trot.
