OTD | India registered their first Test win in Centurion in 2021

On Day 5, Team India, headed by Virat Kohli, easily defeated the last six South African wickets as the visitors defeated the hosts by 113 runs at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. As they look to beat the Proteas in their den for a historic first series victory, the victory put India ahead 1-0 in the three-match series. On the last day, South Africa added just 97 runs and lost six wickets, making it a disastrous day for them.

At the SuperSport Park in Centurion, players like Mohammed Shami, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah were instrumental in India’s victory. Despite excellent efforts, particularly from Temba Bavuma and Lungi Ngidi, the Proteas could not counter India’s pace onslaught. With Ajinkya Rahane (48) providing sufficient assistance, opener Rahul established India’s early dominance. Rahul led from the front in the first innings, reaching a superb hundred and leading the visitors to a convincing total of 327 runs.

When the Proteas responded, they were unable to hold off a dangerous Shami, who became the 11th Indian bowler to reach 200 Test wickets and romped to a fifer. Although the constant rain did cause some disruptions, the Proteas managed to make amends with a respectable showing in the second innings. The hosts, who were aiming for 305 runs, were counting on their openers to get off to a strong start, but the Indian seamers had other ideas. Rassie van der Dussen and Keshav Maharaj were put back into the hut on Day 4 by Bumrah’s late strikes after Shami and Mohammed Siraj had started the game, following the early dismissals of Aiden Markram and Keegan Petersen.

On the last day, South Africa suffered a serious setback when Bumrah dismissed captain Dean Elgar (77) early on. The last wicket was picked by Ravichandran Ashwin, who caught Lungi Ngidi off guard, but Bavuma remained the lone warrior, remaining undefeated at 35 runs.
