OTD| India clinched their first series victory over Australia in 1979

The year 1979 was when India cricket was slowly growing in Test matches and the day of 7th November was one of the best moments for Indian cricket when they won their first-ever series against Australia in Test Cricket. This was a great moment for the Indian team who finally believed they could achieve anything in the game of cricket and their love for the game kept growing.

Australia had come to India in 1979 to play a 6-match Test Series and the Indians were leading 1-0 going into the last Test at the Wankhede. It was a do-or-die match for the Aussies who had to save the series going forward. What followed going into the last match surprised everyone in International cricket and was one of the moments we all deserved to celebrate together.

The Indians demolish the Aussies at home

The Australian bowling attack as usual was still looking as strong as ever with the likes of Rodney Hogg and Geoff Dymock. However, the Indian batting lineup completely outplayed all of them scoring 458/8 and declaring. It was skipper Sunil Gavaskar and Syed Kirmani who were the stars with the bat with their incredible centuries and Chetan Chauhan and Karsan Ghavri with their beautiful 50+ knocks which made it possible.

The Aussie batting was expected to perform decently but was completely outdone by the spin duo of Dilip Doshi and Shivlal Yadav and were bundled out for just 160. The Aussies were forced to follow on and the result was not sweet in the next innings as well this time they bowled out once again for 198 giving India the series and a win by an innings and 100 runs in the end. This was perhaps the best performance we have seen from the Indian team back in 1979.
