OTD: India beat Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test in Nagpur after bowling out the visitors for 91 - their lowest total in the country

On this day, back on February 11, 2023, Team India defeated a strong Australian side in the first Test match held in Nagpur. This win gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. After opting to bat first in the series-opening game, the Australian team was bundled out for 177 runs in their first innings of the game. However, the home team responded by posting 400 runs, guided by captain Rohit Sharma’s 120 and all-rounder Axar Patel’s 84-run knock, establishing a first-innings lead of 223 runs.

The side struggled in their second innings of the game and was blown out for a mere 91 runs, which is their lowest total in India. The visitor’s first innings saw contributions from middle-order batters Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith, who hammered 49 and 37 runs, respectively. Ravindra Jadeja picked up five wickets in the game. In reply to that, the hosts made 400 runs.

However, the visitor’s batting unit crumbled in the second innings of the game, with Ravichandran Ashwin taking five wickets for just 37 runs. Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami took two wickets each as Team India bundled them out for 91 runs in just 32.3 overs with star batter Steve Smith remaining unbeaten for 25 runs.

Notably, this stellar game was highlighted by strong batting and dominant bowling performances. Skipper Rohit Sharma was the only centurion in the game, and Axar Patel made a crucial 84. Ravichandran Ashwin’s performance in the second innings of the game, where he claimed his 31st five-wicket haul, was crucial in Team India’s win. Apart from them, Ravindra Jadeja’s contributions with both bat and ball also played a crucial role in India’s win.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Co. defeated Australia by 2-1 in the Border Gavaskar series and made it to the World Test Championship Final. However, Pat Cummins and his team completed their revenge after thrashing Team India in the 2023 WTC Final.
