OTD| Highest 10th wicket partnership in winning cause in Test Cricket helped Pakistan create history against Australia in Karachi in 1994

The first Test of the 1994 series between Australia and Pakistan stands out as one of the most thrilling encounters in their cricket history. Australia, eyeing their first win in Pakistan after 35 years, dominated the majority of the match. Opting to bat first, Australia posted 337 runs, with Michael Bevan scoring 82 and Steve Waugh contributing 73.

In response, Pakistan fell short by 41 runs, scoring 256 runs with Saeed Anwar’s 85-run knock. Australia, in their third innings, set a challenging target of 314 runs for the 1992 World Cup winners. The hosts faced a daunting task, and the match took a dramatic turn in the final innings. The fourth innings witnessed intense action and constant momentum shifts. Anwar’s solid 77 and Aamer Sohail’s 34 gave Pakistan a promising start. However, a sudden batting collapse left them at 258 for nine, and Australia seemed poised for a historic victory after three and a half decades.

In a dramatic twist, Inzamam-ul-Haq, coming in at number eight, and the eleventh batter, Mushtaq Ahmed, orchestrated an incredible comeback. The duo displayed remarkable resilience, forging a crucial 57-run partnership for the tenth wicket. This partnership, the highest last-wicket stand to secure a Test victory at that time, turned the game on its head. Inzamam’s composed batting and Mushtaq’s support defied Australia’s relentless attack. Their partnership not only steered Pakistan to an unlikely one-wicket victory but also etched their names in cricket history. The 22-year-old pitch bore witness to this extraordinary feat, as Pakistan secured a win against the odds.

The match showcased the unpredictability and excitement of Test cricket, with both teams displaying moments of brilliance and vulnerability. Australia, confident for much of the game, experienced an unexpected twist as Inzamam and Mushtaq’s resilience denied them a victory they had seemingly secured. This unforgettable Test match remains etched in cricket folklore as a testament to the resilience, drama, and unpredictability that make Test cricket truly special.
