Vijay Merchant was a cricketing legend and ambassador of the game in mid-twentieth-century India, was born and died in Mumbai in 1987. Though he played only Test matches, his impact was profound, with 150 first-class games to his name. Making his Test debut against England in Mumbai on December 15, 1933, he concluded his international career against the same opponent in Delhi. His highest Test score, 154, was achieved during this final match.

The cricketing journey began at Sydenham College, where he not only played but also captained the team. The former right hand batter’s success in junior cricket propelled him into the Indian cricket team. In the first-class arena, Merchant’s achievements were remarkable. With 13,470 runs at an average of 71.64, he ranked second only to Don Bradman’s iconic 99.96. His English tour exploits were mirrored in his first-class career, where he showcased consistent brilliance. Notably, his record included 16 centuries in 47 Ranji Trophy innings, boasting an astonishing average of 98.75.

Beyond his playing days, Merchant transitioned into administration, broadcasting, writing, and national selection. His multifaceted career reflected his deep involvement and love for the game. Tragically, he passed away on December 15, 1987, at the age of 76, succumbing to cardiac arrest. In his ten Test matches, all against England, spread over 18 years, Merchant amassed 859 runs. His dominance in the Ranji Trophy was evident, with 16 centuries in 47 innings. Overall, in first-class cricket, he accumulated over 13,000 runs at an impressive average of 71 and also contributed with 65 wickets at 31.87 as a medium-pace off spinner.

After his retirement Merchant’s influence extended into the administrative realm, where, as a Test selector, he played a crucial role in appointing Ajit Wadekar as the captain of India, replacing Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. A charming and modest individual, Vijay Merchant’s legacy extended beyond cricket, as he was revered for his social work among the handicapped, leaving an enduring mark on the sport and society alike.
