OTD| Former England player and part of 2010 T20 World Cup-winning side, Luke Wright was born in 1985

Former England player Luke Wright has turned 39 today. In his playing days, he was a utility player who batted in the top order and could swing his arm as well. Wright was an important part of the 2010 T20 World Cup-winning English side, which was a significant achievement for English cricket as it marked their first prominent title in their trophy cabinet.

The breakthrough year for Luke Wright was 2007, as he made his ODI and T20I debut for England within a span of eight days in September that year. When one looks back at his career, there is a sense of unfulfillment as the talented Englishman could not perform up to his potential. He played 50 ODIs and 51 T20Is for England, but his stats remained underwhelming. Wright scored 707 runs in his ODI career at an average of 20.20, which is not what the team management expects from a top-order batter. In T20I cricket, he had 759 runs to his name at an average of 18.97. Additionally, the former Leicestershire and Sussex player could also contribute with the ball, picking up 15 and 18 wickets in ODI and T20I cricket respectively.

T20 World Cup Champion Luke Wright experienced the zenith of his career in 2010 when England won the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. He played a few impactful knocks apart from picking up 5 wickets in 7 matches that he played in the tournament. However, his international career could not take off after that glorious moment, but he continued to play in franchise leagues all over the world. Luke Wright also had a long first-class and List-A career where he performed quite well. He scored 7622 runs in his first-class career, whereas in the limited-overs format, he amassed more than 5000 runs. The all-rounder played his last international match in 2014 against West Indies. Luke Wright announced retirement from all forms of cricket in 2022 and became a selector for the England men’s team.
