England cricket has produced many stalwarts but one man who took fast bowling to new heights is none other than Stuart Broad. The former England pacer formed a deadly pairing with James Anderson for over a decade and a half before calling it quits from the game in 2023.

His last ever game for England was in the Ashes series in 2023 where he picked two wickets to win the game for his team. Stuart Broad ended his Test career with 604 wickets. Stuart Broad also played in 121 ODI matches and picked 178 wickets with a best of 5/23. While in 56 T20 matches, he picked 65 wickets with 4/24 as his best in the shortest format of the game.

Stuart Broad: Once in a generation player

The son of former England player turned match referee, Chris Broad, young Stuart Broad had a tough start to his career. In one of his earliest games, he proved his talent with a match-winning partnership with Ravi Bopara in an ODI versus India in 2007. Just a few months later his career was forever etched in infamy when he was hit for 6 sixes in an over by Yuvraj Singh.

After years of struggle, the pacer finally started to show his potential with one match-winning spell in the Oval during the 2009 Ashes series. Not just with the ball but also with the bat, Stuart Broad was a sensation as he scored a century in Lord’s against Pakistan.

Stuart Broad then took a famous hat trick versus India during the 2011 series to celebrate one of the biggest landmarks in his career. In 2013 he was embroiled in controversy when he famously didn’t walk during an Ashes Test which was played in England.

While his batting took a tumble, his bowling was at its best as he dismantled the Indian batting unit in 2014. One of the most memorable spells from Stuart Broad was in the 2015 Ashes series on a green top in Trent Bridge where he picked 8/15 with the ball. It was enough to bowl out the Aussies for 60 on the board.

When he announced his retirement, the world was in shock. Stuart Broad with his long mane running into the bowl and having the perfect jump would be missed. As the pacer turns 38, his career may be over but the memories and his legacy aren’t to be forgotten.
