He represented Yorkshire and England between 1930 and 1939. The star cricketer had 1956 wickets to his name in the first-class games at an average of 14.90, while he had 144 scalps to his name from 40 Test matches at an average of 24.37. Hedley was named the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1932 and he is regarded as one of the most effective slow left-arm bowlers to have played the game.
He was born in Leeds on May 18, 1905, and from an early age, he wished to play the game for Yorkshire. Notably, he later went on to sign a professional contract after establishing a good image in cricket. He revealed in an interview that he was initially a medium-paced bowler but shifted to spin bowling in an attempt to secure a place in the Yorkshire team.
Speaking about his international journey, he made his debut on July 29, 1931, against New Zealand, and he was selected based on the strength of his early tour performances. However, after his debut game, he bowled poorly, which made him ruled out for some time from the team. Notably, he regained his spot in the national squad after some time and later went on to become the main bowler for the English camp, having guided some of the epic wins for his side.
Hedley, however, had the best edition of his life during the Ashes series back in 1938, where he picked up 158 first-class wickets at an average of 15.38, placing him third overall in national averages. He had played all four Test matches against Australia. Notably, his side thoroughly defeated Australia, and Hedley played a pivotal role in guiding his side to an epic win against tough Aussies.
