Former Australian cricketer and match referee David Boon has turned 63 today. Boon was known for his unique batting style and rowdy moustache that gave him a very dominating appearance. He had an attitude to fight it out till the end on the cricket pitch and not let the opposition dominate the proceedings until he was there on the crease.
Boon played for Tasmania in domestic cricket and is arguably the biggest name to represent the state apart from Ricky Ponting. The right-handed batter made his international debut for the Kangaroos in a One-Day international match against West Indies at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1984. The belligerent dynamite soon got the opportunity to make his test debut as well, against the same opposition at Brisbane in the same year.
A Durable Fighter
David Boon played for Australia in both formats of the game and was equally important to the team in both of them. Boon, in his test career, took part in 107 test matches scoring 7422 runs at an average of 43.65. Apart from the runs he also amassed a fair share of centuries as his century count in test cricket stood at 21 along with 32 half-centuries.
He was impressive for the Aussies in ODI cricket as well and represented the national team in 181 One-Day internationals. Boon scored 5964 runs in his ODI career at a decent average of 37.04. The former top-order batter played his last international game against Sri Lanka at Adelaide in 1996.
After bidding farewell to international cricket Boon has also been contributing to cricket in the capacity of a match referee. He has officiated several memorable games and is known for an impeccable understanding of the game. Boon will always be an unforgettable figure in international cricket primarily for his long cricketing career in which he played numerous outstanding innings and then as a match referee.
