OTD | Fakhar Zaman's magnificent hundred helped Pakistan to beat New Zealand by DLS method in ODI World Cup 2023

On this day in 2023, Pakistan claimed a win over New Zealand by 21 runs via DLS method in the ODI World Cup 2023 match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Rain turned out to be the nightmare for the Kiwis as it affected the game. Despite posting a great total of 401 runs on the board, New Zealand lost the match by 21 runs, thanks to a masterclass from Fakhar Zaman.

Babar Azam won the toss and elected to field first, a decision which was criticized by many. As it turned out, Babar was proven right given the rain forecast. NZ batted well on a good surface. Despite losing Devon Conway for 35(39) just after the powerplay, Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra played a good hand on a wicket which kept getting better to bat on.

Rachin was the star of the show who notched up a fantastic ton at a quick pace. His 108(94) and Kane’s 95(79) helped NZ for a great finish. The likes of Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, and Mitchell Santner finished well for the Kiwis who posted 401/6 on the board in their fifty overs. Defending a big total, NZ got a great start.

Tim Southee dismissed Abdullah Shafique early in the innings. However, Babar Azam joined Fakhar Zaman and tried to turn things around for Pakistan. While the skipper was good from his end, it was Fakhar who played a blinder from his end. The Southpaw hammered both pacers and spinners for fun all around the park.

The star batter rose to the occasion and did well in a virtual must-win game for his side. Zaman smashed an unbeaten 126*(81) which included 8 fours and 11 massive sixes. At the other end, Azam played a fine hand of 66(63). Pakistan was 200/1 after 25.3 overs operating at a run rate of 7.84 when rain interfered. According to the DLS method, they won the match by 21 runs.
