The first-ever edition of the Women’s World Cup was played in 1973 and it was played on a round robin basis where the table toppers won the title. In 1993 the tournament was hosted by England and it was this year that they won the title in front of a packed house at the home of cricket.
Eight teams which included, hosts England, New Zealand, Australia, India, Ireland, West Indies, Denmark and the Netherlands took part in the event. New Zealand finished top of the table after the round-robin phase, while England finished second.
Australia and India finished third and fourth respectively and missed out on a chance to finish in the top two. The final game of the tournament saw England and New Zealand lock horns for the biggest prize in Women’s ODI cricket which was played in the 60 over variant.
