OTD | England whitewashed West Indies in a three-match ODI series in the Caribbean in 1988

On this day, back in 1988, the English cricket team whitewashed the West Indies in a three-match ODI series in the Lords. This was the iconic series played between England and the West Indies, where the hosts completely dominated against strong visiting sides and won the ODI series by 3-0 on their home ground.

Speaking about the final ODI here, the West Indies had just posted 178/7 in the given 55 overs. The side had a great start as Gordon Greenidge made 39 runs, but Desmond Haynes made 10 runs, and Richie Richardson was just able to make 13 runs. However, skipper Viv Richards made just nine runs, and Gus Logie was left on a duck. In addition, Carl Hooper made 12 runs while Jeff Dujon and Malcom Marshall made 30 and 41 runs, respectively, to help his side post a decent total.

However, during the chase, Graham Gooch made 28 runs while star batter Chris Broad made 34 runs to give them a solid start to the game. Skipper Mike Gatting was unbeaten by 40 runs, along with Allan Lamb, who also hammered in 30 runs to help his side win the game. While Ian Bishop had scalped two wickets and Carl Hooper had one scalp to his name, they couldn’t save the side from defeat as the hosts were able to win the game by seven wickets with 30 balls to spare.

Meanwhile, the hosts recorded a great win of 49 runs in the second ODI, which took place on May 21 at Leeds. Speaking about the game here, the English side posted 186/8 against the strong visiting side, but they could only manage to get 139 runs before being bowled out in the game.

However, England won by six wickets in the first ODI, which took place on May 19 at Birmingham. The visiting sides posted 217 runs while opting to bat first. However, the hosts chased down the total with 12 balls to spare to give them a great start against the Windies.
