OTD | England slumped to their first home series defeat since 2014 in 2021

If we are talking about who has been the most dominant home team in international cricket, the England team always comes to mind. The Barmy Army has always been the best team in seaming conditions with amazing pacers and terrific batters in Test cricket. This has made them one of the most dangerous teams in the long format especially when they are playing in home conditions.

This is also the reason why the Poms have one of the best records at home. They have been dominant in their home ground and their conditions. After 2014 the English went on another winning streak at home where teams were struggling to beat them. But like always every streak eventually comes to an end and there was finally a team that was able to do that.

The Kiwi’s get the better of the Poms

The year was 2014 and the England team was still enjoying their undefeated streak at home. This was until they met the New Zealand team at home led by the great Kane Williamson. It was a two-match series where it was the Black Caps who came out on top. The first Test was played in Lords where the Kiwis started the proceedings with the bat, and it was Devon Conway on debut who was the star of this match as he scored a double hundred to get New Zealand to a decent score of 378. England was then put under the pump with the Kiwi pacers creating havoc and all they could look back at was a century from Rory Burns. Unfortunately, that was not enough to get them the lead and they bundled out for 275. New Zealand did struggle a bit in the second innings but still gave a target of 273 on what was a tricky pitch to bat on. England did try to come, but could only manage a draw due to rain causing problems in the match as well.

This left the second Test at Edgbaston to be do or die for both the teams. This time the team was led by Tom Latham and the England team batted first and despite a great partnership between Rory Burns and Dan Lawrence could not manage a big total as they were bowled out for 303 due to the great Kiwi bowling attack. They came back with the bat with the trio of Ross Taylor, Devon Conway and Will Young getting them a solid lead of 88. The English could only reply by getting bowled out for 122 giving them a target of 38, which New Zealand chased down with ease and broke the home winning streak of the three lions.
