OTD | England became the No. 1 Test side in 2011 for the first time since the rankings were established in 2003

There might have been plenty of top ranked teams in cricket right now but we surely can’t forget the nation who has given us this game as well. The England team has still been one of the most powerful teams in international cricket and it has been a joy seeing this team give us some great performances and introduce us to some great players in the game. There have been some great moments in cricket which we will always remember this team for.

There is no doubt that the England team have enjoyed a lot of success becoming ODI World champions in 2019 and T20 World champions in 2022 and also making a huge impact on Test cricket. However, the story of England’s success in the longest format goes back a long way and we will be talking about one of these moments. It is safe to say that the dominance in red ball cricket is something that all the England cricket fans have been celebrating for years.

England become number one Test team in 2011

The year 2011 did not start off as the best years for the Poms as they lost the ODI series against Australia and had a slightly disappointing 2011 ODI World Cup where they crashed out in the quarter finals. However, they chose to focus all their energy on the Test matches and had a great start beating Sri Lanka in their home ground. Their next challenge was the number one Test team India who they had to beat by a big margin to get to the top of the rankings. This is what exactly happened as the Barmy Army got the better of the Indian side and jumped to the number one ranking in Test matches.

There were great contributions from the England side whether it was Kevin Pietersen’s aggressive style of batting or the pace duo of Stuart Broad and James Anderson who created havoc. All these factors helped the England side reach the top on the 13th of August and continue their domination in Test matches. From here we finally saw an England team who showed some fight and became an even bigger super power in cricket which we could never had imagined at all.
