England recorded the greatest ODI score on this day four years ago when they defeated Australia at Trent Bridge in Nottingham with a massive total of 481/6 in 50 overs on June 19, 2018, in Nottingham. The most devastating loss Australia has ever suffered came as a result of England’s excellent batting, measured in terms of runs as they were defeated by a humongous margin of 242 runs.
The then-Australian captain Tim Paine won the toss and elected to field first but his decision proved wrong as English openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow stitched a cracking 159-run partnership for the 1st wicket. Roy (82 runs off 61 balls) departed in the 20th over but provided a strong foundation for the upcoming batters.
Bairstow (139 runs off 92 balls) and Alex Hales (147 runs off 92 balls) both smashed wonderful centuries which was followed by Eoin Morgan’s quickfire 67-run knock which came off just 30 deliveries. England’s innings consisted of 41 fours and 21 sixes. Australian bowlers had no clue as they were leaking a lot of runs. However, Jhye Richardson picked up 3 wickets but conceded 92 runs in his 10 overs quota.
A brilliant all-round performance from the Australian team
Australia’s attempt to reach the enormous mark of 481 runs was dealt a severe setback when D’Arcy Short left the field in the fourth over with just 15 runs scored. After scoring a half-century, the second opening batter, Travis Head’s innings (51 runs off 39 balls), seemed to offer some optimism. However, his performance was cut short when he was bowled by all-rounder Moeen Ali in the 13th over of the innings.
As Australian batters began to struggle against the spin pair of Adil Rashid and Ali, the situation started to deteriorate. The visitors’ innings collapsed as a result of the excellent bowling of Rashid and Ali as they lost their final six wickets in the space of only 66 runs. Australia were ultimately bundled out on the score of just 239 runs with 13 overs to spare.
