OTD | Barbados Tridents beat Guyana Amazon Warriors to clinch their 2nd CPL Trophy in 2019, ending their 11-match winning streak

On this day in 2019, the Barbados Tridents secured their second Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title by defeating the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the finals, triumphing by a margin of 27 runs. This victory was a significant milestone for Barbados, as it marked their second CPL championship. The first being in 2014 when they also beat the Guyana Amazon Warriors by 7 runs. Moreover, this win put an end to Guyana’s remarkable 11-match winning streak in the tournament.

The final showdown took place at Trinidad’s Brian Lara Stadium on October 12, 2019. Captain Jason Holder, leading the Barbados Tridents, won the toss and elected to bat first. The opening duo of Alex Hales and Johnson Charles provided a strong start for the team. However, the standout performance of the match came from Jonathan Carter, who blazed an incredible 50 runs off just 27 balls, contributing to the Barbados Tridents’ impressive total of 171/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Brandon King failed to clinch the game for GAW

In pursuit of this substantial target, the Guyana Amazon Warriors encountered several hurdles. They lost wickets early in their innings, and their middle-order batsmen struggled to find their footing. Despite a commendable effort from Brandon King, who managed to score 43 runs in 33 balls, it wasn’t sufficient to bridge the gap. The Guyana Amazon Warriors ultimately concluded their innings with a total of 144/9, falling well short of their target.

This victory held particular significance as it halted the Guyana Amazon Warriors’ remarkable streak of 11 consecutive wins in the tournament. The Warriors had been the top contenders, having maintained a perfect record in the league stages by winning all ten of their matches. They also beat Barbados Tridents in qualifiers to qualify for the finals.

However, The leadership of Jason Holder and the outstanding performances of the Barbados Tridents’ team members were instrumental in clinching their second CPL title. This triumph will be etched in CPL history as a thrilling and historic moment, underscoring their ability to overcome a formidable opponent like the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
