OTD Barbados Royals ended the Guyana Amazon Warriors’ 11-match winning streak to bag their second CPL title in 2019

On this day in 2019, Barbados Royals claimed a massive win over Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final of the Caribbean Premier League. The Warriors were on a winning streak of 11 matches before coming into the final. When it mattered the most, the Royals posted an above-par total of 171 runs on the board and defended it comfortably to claim a 27-run victory.

Batting first, Barbados got a great start from Johnson Charles who went berserk from his end. The opener made good use of the powerplay overs and smashed a 22-ball 39 which set a good platform for the batting side. However, the Royals could not make good use of the start. In the middle overs, none of the batters could get going which ensured that the runr rate fell.

J Carter changed the game for his side. The star player finished the game in style. His knock of 50(27) included 4 fours and sixes each. It ensured that the Royals posted 171 runs on the board. 63 of them came in the last 5 overs. On slow wickets where there was no dew, 172 was a difficult chase. The Royals bowlers made the life of the Warriors batters difficult.

Right from the beginning, the Royals bowlers took wickets and put pressure on the batters. In a dilemma to score runs or to hold on to their wickets, the batters failed when it mattered. Barring Brandon King and Keemo Paul, others either batted slowly or could not stay longer. The Royals bowlers bowled well and did not give easy runs.

Raymon Reiffer was the pick of the bowlers who claimed 4/24 in his 4 overs. He was assisted well by the likes of Harry Gurney and Ashley Nurse who claimed 2/24 and 2/17 respectively in their 4 overs. The Royals claimed a comfortable win by 27 runs to clinch their second CPL title. It was a heartbreak for the Warriors as they couldn’t win the game that mattered the most.
