On this day, September 10, 2023, the Barbados Royals were able to sweep the second WCPL title from the Guyana Amazon Warriors. The Royals were dominating the tournament throughout, which led to them lifting the trophy of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League. In the Brian Lara stadium in Trinidad, the Royals had beaten Guyana Amazon Warriors by eight runs. Royals’ skipper Hayley Matthews was leading from the front delivering an all-round performance scoring 82 off 59 balls just before taking two wickets.
The Barbados Royals were able to win three matches in the robin-robin group stage. Their winning streak was broken as they lost a match to the Trinbago Knight Riders, but that did not affect their chance to reach the summit clash. However, the title winners were able to defeat Trinbago Knight Riders, to reach the finals.
The opening duo, Matthews and Gaby Lewis were able to score 36 runs before the first wicket and Matthews was able to get another 108 runs prior to the second wicket with Rashada Williams. Once the partnership between Matthews and Williams was broken, the Amazon Warriors were back in the game with a four-wicket haul by Ismail. Amanda-Jade Wellington’s four-ball ten-run cameo helped the Royals to finish on 169 for 7.
Ismail was able to pick four wickets for 30 runs and Shreyanka Patil was able to bowl a maiden over at the 18th over to finish on 1 for 25 for her overs. Matthew’s incredible performance in the finals was a great contribution from her side to the team. She was named the Player of the Finals for her all-round display in the final encounter of the WCPL. She became the Most Valuable Player of the Women’s Premier League. On the other hand, with five wickets and scored 253 runs Devine was named the Player of the Series.
