OTD | Bangladesh's tour of New Zealand was called off after a terrorist attack on two Christchurch mosques in 2019

On this day, back on March 15, 2019, the third Test match between New Zealand and Bangladesh in Christchurch was called off after a shooting at a mosque. The Bangla Tigers narrowly managed to escape such a horrendous incident after an attack on a mosque in Christchurch, where they all were present for their last and final game of the tour against New Zealand.

It was reported that around 49 people were killed in the mass shooting, and police later declared this as a dreadful incident after the attack at the Masjid Al Noor Mosque, which was near the Hagley Oval, which was the venue for the third and final Test match between these two powerhouses.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the second shooting took place at a mosque in Christchurch. Notably, the Bangladeshi team was on their way to reach the mosque in 2019 to offer prayers ahead of their showdown, but they stayed in their bus after witnessing a horrendous incident in the mosque. The side was already under lockdown in their dressing room of the stadium before the two cricketing boards decided to cancel this Test match.

Coming to the results, Bangladesh lost the Test series as they failed to win the first two Test matches as hosts New Zealand had an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The Bangladesh team also suffered a 3-0 defeat in the ODI series and failed to win a single match on their New Zealand tour.

Meanwhile, this terror attack on the two New Zealand mosques that has led to the death of 49 people in the city from which the Bangla Tigers had a narrow escape saw strong condemnation from the cricketing fraternity as well. The 2019 Indian skipper Virat Kohli also took to social media, calling this incident shocking and tragic. Team India cricketers Harbhajan Singh, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin strongly criticized this incident.’

However, the Bangladeshi team manager and support staff later confessed to the media that their side was lucky enough to escape such an incident. Many staff members revealed that the New Zealand board made the arrangements quickly to fly the team back to the country as soon as possible.
