Former Australian great Glenn McGrath made his test debut against New Zealand on this day in Perth. He went on the become the spearhead of the Australian bowling attack. He was arguably the greatest fast bowler that Australia ever produced. McGrath represented the Aussies in 124 test matches where he picked up 563 wickets at a mindboggling average of 21.64. His domestic performances earned him the maiden national call-up for a home test series in 1993 against New Zealand

First Innings

The Kiwi captain Martin Crowe won the toss and put Australia to bat. The Australian team grabbed the opportunity and put up 398 runs on the board in the first innings. The wicketkeeper-batsman Ian Healy scored a brilliant century that enabled Australia to go big in the first innings. Mark Taylor and Paul Reiffel made half-centuries along with a notable contribution from Steve Waugh to put Australia in a comfortable position.

New Zealand, in reply, put up a solid batting performance taking the lead in the first innings. The Kiwis managed to score 419 runs before declaring their innings. Glenn McGrath’s debut did not go as planned as he could not make much of an impact. He had 2 wickets in his tally in the first innings. The right-arm pacer dismissed the opener Mark Greatbatch and, Danny Morrison in the later phase of the innings

Second Innings

Australia had to score big in the second innings to give themselves a chance of taking the match away from an imminent draw. They scored 323 at the loss of just one wicket and declared their innings. Mark Taylor made a brilliant century whereas Michael Slatter missed his century by just one run.

The Australian bowling attack needed to show up with their best bowling performance to dismiss the Kiwi batters in quick succession and win the match. But New Zealand was determined to see through the Australian bowling attack and eventually drew the match. Australia could only pick up four wickets in the second innings. The debutant Glenn McGrath had only one dismissal in the second innings
