
South Africa hosted the 2024 Under-19 World Cup which saw India and Australia contest the finals. Uday Saharan and his side began the tournament with wins over Bangladesh, Ireland, USA, and Nepal in the group phases. India, who had come to the tournament as the defending champions beat hosts South Africa in the semi-finals by two wickets.
Australia led by Hugh Weibgen started the campaign with four successive wins over Namibia, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and England. Their match against West Indies was washed out as the Aussies proceeded to the final four stages against Pakistan. Just like India, the Aussies had to scrape through with a one wicket win to enter the finals.

It was Australia who won the toss and chose to bat first, Sam Konstas was out for an eight ball duck to Raj Limbani. Harry Dixon and skipper Hugh Weibgen then added 78 runs for the second wicket in 109 balls as Australia looked set for a big score. Naman Tiwari though ended the stand with the wicket of Dixon for 42 and Weibgen for 48.
Harjas Singh and Ryan Hicks then came to Australia’s rescue with a stand of 66 runs for the fourth wicket in 68 balls. Harjas Singh was the best batter for Australia with 55 off 64 balls which included three boundaries and three sixes. Oliver Peake’ 46 not out off 43 balls helped Australia reach 253 on the board.
Callum Vidler struck first getting Arshin Kulkarni for three runs. Adarsh Singh and Musheer Khan added 37 runs for the second wicket as the Aussie bowlers stormed back into the contest. Mahli Beardman first removed Musheer for 22 before dismissing Uday Saharan for eight. Raf MacMillan joined in the act as he got the key scalp of dangerous Sachin Dhas for nine.
Macmillan and Charlie Anderson then got the wickets of Priyanshu Moliya and Avinash Aravelly to leave India at 91/6. Once Adarsh Singh was out for 47, India’s hopes took further tumble. Murugan Abhishek waged a lone battle as he scored 42 off 46 balls to keep India in the game. Calum Vidler dismissed Abhishek in the 41st over and Tom Straker then got the wicket of Saumy Pandey to help Australia win the match and the Under-19 World Cup title by 79 runs.
