OTD | Australia Women won their sixth World Cup title after beating West Indies in 2013 

The 2013 Women’s World Cup was hosted by India from 31st January to 17th February. Australia went onto win the title by a massive margin of 114 in the final game of the tournament which was held at the Brabourne Stadium. This was Australia’s sixth title win as they dominated the tournament and showed why they are the best team across the world. 

England, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and India were in Group A of the tournament. The hosts crashed out in the group stages. Both India and West Indies had just two points from three games but India’s inferior run-rate saw West Indies head into the Super Six stages. Here West Indies topped the group with Australia with both sides having eight points from five matches. 

Australia on the other hand had a much easier run in the group stages with wins over Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa. Their only loss in the Super six stages was against West Indies in Mumbai. As the two teams headed to Brabourne Stadium, the eyes of the world were on a classic encounter. 

Australian eves claim sixth ODI World title 

Aussie skipper Jodie Fields won the toss and batted first and the decision worked well. Openers Meg Lanning and Rachel Haynes added 52 runs for the first wicket in ten overs. The duo used the power plays well and scored boundaries at will. Lanning was out for 31 while Haynes went on to score 52. 

If the West Indian bowlers thought their ordeal was over, they were wrong. Jess Duffin smashed 75 off 76 balls with eight fours and two sixes to register the highest score of the game. Skipper Jodie Fields then gave the innings the impetus with her 36 off 38 balls as the Aussies posted 259 on the board for the loss of seven wickets. 

Elyse Perry then stuck three huge blows that left the chasing side in tatters. Perry dismissed Kycia Knight, Natasha McLean, and Stefanie Taylor in a spell of three overs. None of the West Indian batters were able to put a huge total on the board as Merrisa Aguillar top scored with 23. West Indies were all out for 145 to lose by 114 runs as Julie Hunter picked the final wicket of the game.
