 OTD | Australia Wins Their Third Consecutive Women's World Cup in 1988

In international women’s cricket, the Australian women’s team, formerly known as the Southern Stars, plays for Australia. Since 1855, when the first match was recorded in Bendigo, women have participated in the sport in Australia. When the Australian Women’s Cricket Council (AWCC) was established in March 1931, its founding members included the states of Victoria, Queensland, and New South Wales.

Australia hosted the competition in 1988 for the first time after their 1978 victory was followed by 1982. The final of World’s Cup was played between England and Australia at Melbourne cricket ground. . Women’s cricket was played for the first time since 1949 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Going into the match England women won the toss and elected to bat first. Opening the batting attack for the England team Carole Hodges and Wendy Watson had an opening partnership of 46 runs before Wendy Watson losing wicket. Captain Jane Powell scored just 1 run before returning to the dressing room. As England women were struggling to score runs Janette Brittin stood up and scored 46 runs as they managed to score a target of 127 runs for chase. While for Australian Women’s Lynette Ann Fullston was a key player in the bowling as she took three wickets.

In reply to 127 targets set by the England team Australian women got off to a bad start as Ruth Buckstein was gone on duck. While Sharlene Heywood was back in the pavilion at 5 runs. But opener Lindsay Reeler and Denise Annetts didn’t give up their hope. Lindsay Reeler scored 59 runs and remained not out while Denise Annetts missed her half-century as she scored 48 runs and remained not out. Their partnership helped the team to win the final which resulted in the Australian Women’s lifting the World Cup at home. They defeated England once more to complete a hat-trick of titles, therefore it turned out to be a huge success.
