OTD| Allrounder Dominic Drakes led St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to their first CPL title in 2021

On this day, two years back, the final of the Caribbean Premier League took place between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and St Lucia Kings. Dominic Drakes helped St Kitts and Nevis Patriots defeat St Lucia Kings by three wickets during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final in 2021 with an unbeaten 24-ball 48. As a result, the Patriots earned their first CPL championship, while St. Lucia suffered a second straight loss in the championship game.

The Patriots had to pursue down the 160 run target set for them by St. Lucia Kings. With Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, and Evin Lewis in their batting order, the Patriots appeared to have lost their way during the chase as they got down to 95/5 during the 14th over.

Dominic Drakes takes St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to their maiden title

Drakes, though, then put on a bold performance of death-over batting and took the mantle of taking his side to their maiden Caribbean Premier League title on his shoulders. Drakes’ innings, along with contributions from Sherfane Rutherford, who scored 25 from 22 balls as well as Fabian Allen who notched up 20 off 18 deliveries, reduced the Patriots’ winning total from 55 off the last six overs to nine required off the final over, and was bowled by Kesrick Williams.

Drakes hit a single from the first delivery, putting Naseem Shah, the No. 9 bowler, to the crease. Shah then managed to get a single from the second ball. The next ball was a dot, and the batsman then scored two runs.

Drakes next struck Williams for four beyond extra cover before taking a single from the last delivery of the over and getting the Patriots across the finish line. This powering finish from Drakes has surely written his name in the record books of the Caribbean Premier League.
