OTD | A hat-trick by Moeen Ali sealed England’s resounding win over South Africa in the 100th Test to be played at The Oval in 2017

In 2017, England beat South Africa by 239 runs in the 3rd Test match of the series at the Oval. That was an epic win considering the vast margin and Moeen Ali’s hattrick that got England past the victory line. South Africa’s poor batting performance is something that led to their downfall in the 3rd Test. On winning the toss, England elected to bat first and scored 353 runs in the first innings. Alastair Cook scored 88 runs off 200 balls, while Ben Stokes scored a magnificent century. 

Stokes’ 112 runs off 153 balls was something to cherish since he smashed the South African bowling attack with nine boundaries and four sixes. Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada took three wickets each. Tembu Bavuma scored a half-century in the first innings for the Proteas. No other batter could cross the 40-run mark. For England, Toby Roland-Jones claimed a five-wicket haul. In the second innings, England scored 313 runs and declared the innings. Tom Westley, Joe Root, and Jonny Bairstow scored half-centuries, which helped them reach a good total. 

Keshav Maharaj took three wickets, and Chris Morris took two for South Africa. England’s Moeen Ali claimed four wickets, including a hattrick, which helped England complete the game sooner than they would have. Even though Dean Elgar scored 136 runs off 228 balls, South Africa lost the game by a huge margin of 239 runs. Ben Stokes was given the Player of the Match award for an all-round performance.
