On this day former West Indian captain Clive Lloyd made his debut in test cricket against India at the Brabourne Stadium in Bombay. This was the beginning of a legendary career that gave the West Indies numerous moments to cherish, and most importantly the two World Cups in 1975 and 1979. In his very first test, he gave a glimpse of his immense potential with a notable performance against India.
First Innings
The Indian team batted first in the match and made 296 runs in the first innings. In reply, West Indies could not start on a good note as they lost wickets in the initial phase. Clive Llyod proved to be crucial for the West Indies in the middle order as he provided solidity to a nervy batting display. He created an instrumental partnership with a stalwart like Gary Sobers. A young Llyod made 82 runs in the first innings of his international career and matched the senior players in the squad in terms of performance. West Indies ended up with 421 runs in the first innings and took a massive lead to put India under pressure.
Second Innings
The Indian team batted better in the second innings and scored 316 runs but could not put a mammoth target for West Indies to chase. Unexpectedly, the West Indies’ start was horrible as India had early success with three quick dismissals. But it was once again Clive Lloyd’s turn to show his potential and he stitched a match-winning partnership with the skipper Gary Sobers. The left-hander played an unbeaten 78-run knock to assist his captain and guide West Indies to a fairly comprehensive victory by 6 wickets.
The debutant impressed everyone with his ability to thrive under pressure and take responsibility when the team is going through a rough phase. This carried on throughout his career and that is why he was able to lead South Africa so successfully for a long period of time.
