OTD | 2012, India won their third Under-19 World Cup after captain Unmukt Chand scored an unbeaten century in the final against Australia

Unmukt Chand has totally disappeared from Indian cricket but in 2012 his name was in the list of rising stars of Indian cricket. 12 years ago, on this day (26th August 2012) Unmukt Chand lifted the Under-19 ICC World Cup for India against Australia in finals. India defeated Australia by six wickets to lift the trophy. 

The final summit of the Under-19 ICC World Cup was held at Townsville in which the two giants of cricketing nation Australia and India were faced to win the trophy. On the day of finals Indian was led by Unmukt Chand and Australian team was led by William Bosisto. India U19 won the toss and elected to field first. As the match went on India got an earlier breakthrough as Australia’s first wicket went on for 2 runs as Jimmy Peirson was dismissed by Sandeep Sharma. 

Later the captain took control of the game as he went on to score 87 runs and remained not out and put on a fighting total of 225 runs for India. In reply to the target India lost the early wicket of Prashant Chopra who went out on duck as Steketee got his wicket. But Indiana captain Unmukt Chand was in the crease and took control of the game. 

Meanwhile wickets were falling on regular intervals Smit Patel stood strong along with Unmukt Chand. While Unmukt Chand scored 111 runs from 130 balls as he smashed seven fours and six sixes in his way to century while Smit Patel scored 62 runs as both the batter remained not out and India won the Under-19 ICC World Cup trophy by six wickets in hand. 

Due to his excellent knock Unmukt Chand was awarded with the Man of the Match award at the end of the match. Though he was a rising star during that time he couldn’t keep up with the fame and his career with India didn’t last long. Currently Unmukt Chand plays for USA team and was part of recently ended Major League Cricket tournament.
