On this day, back in 1995, India’s star cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin guided the side to their fourth successive Asia Cup title. Notably, the Men in Blue were able to defeat a strong Sri Lankan side by eight wickets at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Dubai. Azharuddin was named Player of the Match owing to his unbeaten 90 runs in an inning.

Speaking about the game, it was the India’s skipper, Mohammad Azharuddin, who won the toss and invited Sri Lanka to bat first in the game. Notably, after being sent to bat first, Sri Lanka was able to post 230/7 in the given 50 overs. The side didn’t have a great start as openers Roshan Mahanama and Sanath Jayasuriya left after scoring 15 and 22 runs, respectively. However, it was star batter Asanka who made 85 runs to help his side stand in the dominant spot.

Following them, Aravinda de Silva was out for just 13 runs, while skipper Arjuna Ranatunga was departed for three runs. In addition, Hashan Tillakaratne was out for 22 runs, while Romesh Kaluwitharana made 18 runs. Later, Ruwan and Chaminda Vaas made unbeaten 7 and 8 runs, respectively, to help his side post 230/7 in the given 50 overs. However, it was a great bowling effort from legendary cricketers Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath, who had scalped two wickets each while Manoj Prabhakar had picked up one wicket to restrict Sri Lanka to a narrow score.

Meanwhile, during the chase, Team India had a decent start as openers Manoj Prabhakar and Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar were able to make 9 and 41 runs, respectively. However, it was great batter Navjot Sidhu who made unbeaten 84 runs from 106 balls featuring five fours and stitched the unbeaten stand with skipper Mohammad Azharuddin, who also made unbeaten 90 runs from 89 balls featuring five fours and two sixes with a solid strike rate of 102 to help his side chase down the total with 49 balls to spare.
