Former Indian captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth has turned 64 today. He belongs to the tradition of remarkable Indian openers who have paved the way to victory for Team India. Srikkanth was an explosive and carefree opening batter who would not worry about textbook cricket but rather find his way through adversities and carve a special place for himself. Krishnamachari Srikkanth will always be remembered as the unperturbed batting knight who would demolish any bowling lineup on his day. He was one of the few ultimate members of the Indian team that won the 1983 World Cup and lit up a new horizon for Indian cricket.
Kris Srikkanth made his debut for India in the home series against England in 1981/82. He got to wear the Indian jersey for the first time in an ODI match against England at Ahmedabad. A couple of days later he made his test debut as well, against the same opposition at the Wankhede Stadium. Srikkanth formed a unique recognition and he was very different from the contemporary openers. He cemented his place in the Indian team very soon and also got selected in the squad for the 1983 World Cup in England which India eventually won.
A New Template and Class
More than the stats and records that the former Indian opener accumulated it was his flair and explosive style that made a long-lasting impact on future generations of batters. Srikkanth represented India in 43 test matches where he scored 2062 runs at an average of 29.88 with 2 centuries and 12 half-centuries. It was the One-Day cricket that suited him more and he played more for India in the shorter format. Srikkanth amassed 4091 runs in ODI cricket at an average of 29.01 with 4 centuries to his name apart from 27 half-centuries.
The former Tamil Nadu veteran also served as the chairman of the selection committee and played a crucial role in that capacity as well.
