OTD 1952 | Leading England off-spinner of his generation John Emburey was born

The former English first-class cricketer John Emburey has played for Middlesex, Northamptonshire, Western Province, Berkshire, and England. He has been a part of the English squad, which finished as runners-up at the 1987 Cricket World Cup. Moreover, Emburey was a right-arm spin bowler and a brilliant lower-order batter with the style of a grafter. He was one of the most dangerous bowlers with an arms ball outswinger, and hence, he was named the Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1984.

He was an amazing bowler who featured in four Ashes series won by England, in 1978–9, 1981, 1985, and 1986-7 (as well as in two defeats in 1989 and 1993). He was the captain of England in Test matches for a small amount of time in 1988 and played two games. However, the position didn’t favor and he lost both games. After that, he was sacked from captaincy and continued to play like an all-rounder. Emburey was a brilliant captain in white-ball cricket, leading them to victory in the Sharjah Cup in 1986-87.

After retiring from cricket, he became the coach of the England A cricket team to a 3–0 win in India in 1995. Later, in 2001, he became the Middlesex County Cricket Club coach but was sacked in 2008. Due to low performances, he kept on losing his coach’s position because of losses in various series. Later, in February 2008, he signed on as the coach of the Ahmedabad Rockets in the second season of the Indian Cricket League.
