On this day 33 years back in the year 1990, Pakistan were locking horns against New Zealand in the three-match home Test series and it was the last day of the first Test in Karachi. The first test of this three-match Test series is also registered in the history books for the bowling heroics of the then-star pace duo Pakistan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.
Both pace-bowling legends achieved a unique feat for the first time in Tests as they shared more than 10 wickets in that match. Wasim Akram scalped a total of 8 wickets in the match; on the other hand, his pace-bowling partner Waqar Younis claimed 7 wickets in the entire match. Both the pacers shared 15 wickets out of New Zealand’s 20 wickets in both innings.
On the back of these bowling heroics from Wasim and Waqar Younis, Pakistan won this series opener by a big margin of an innings and 43 runs.
Speaking of the action of the match, Pakistan skipper Javed Miandad won the toss and asked Kiwis to bat first. Batting first, the visitors got bundled out on the score of 196 runs in the first innings courtesy of the brilliant bowling from Wasim-Waqar duo.

In response to New Zealand’s 196 runs, Pakistan posted a mammoth total of 433 runs for the loss of 6 wickets before declaring the innings. The entire innings of Pakistan revolved around the outstanding double-century knock of opener Shoaib Mohammad, who scored 203 runs, with 23 fours. Other than him, his opening partner Ramiz Raja also scored 78 runs followed by Saleem Malik’s 43-run knock.
While batting in their second innings and overall, the third innings of the match, Martin Crowe’s men surrendered one more time against the lethal bowling from none other than the pair of Wasim and Waqar. Both the bowlers shared a total of 7 wickets in New Zealand’s second innings, bundling out them on the score of 194 runs.
However, Shoaib Mohammad won the ‘Player of the Match award in this match for his double century but history still remembers this clash for the heroics of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younus.
