ODI World Cup 2023: 3 reasons why Mohammed Shami can win Player of the Tournament award

ODI World Cup 2023: 3 reasons why Mohammed Shami can win Player of the Tournament award

Mohammed Shami without doubt is one of the best bowlers India has produced this generation. During the ODI World Cup 2023 the 33-year-old showed his class picking 16 wickets from just five games.

The form shown by the right-arm pacer has made many question the Indian team management about his earlier exclusion. India had started the tournament with Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur playing the first four games. Since his inclusion Shami has picked two fifers and one four wicket haul.  Mohammed Shami on the back of such efforts has put his name in the top echelons of the leading wicket takers of ODI World Cup 2023. The 33-year-old is also the leading wicket taker for India in ODI World Cup history.

In this article let us take a closer look at why Mohammed Shami can win the Player of the tournament award:

1. Impact bowler for India –

Ever since he has come into the Indian team, Mohammed Shami has changed the shape of the Indian team. With Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah already leading the attack, Rohit Sharma needed a third cog in the wheel.

Mohammed Shami’s entry during the game versus New Zealand changed the whole scenario. Team India now had three bowlers who could not only bowl with the new ball, but also had three key death bowlers.

2. Terrific spell versus England –

The last time India and England had played in an ODI World Cup was in 2019, where Shami had taken 5/69. The Indians lost the game and that propelled the English to win the tournament for the first time.

This time India had scored just 229 and needed a special bowling effort. After Jasprit Bumrah’s two early wickets, Mohammed Shami came in and changed the momentum of the game. His battle against Ben Stokes in itself can be called the best spell of the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament.

3. Best average amongst all the bowlers –

Mohammed Shami has an average of 9.56 during the ODI World Cup tournament which is the lowest for the entire tournament. The next best average is 15.64 by Jasprit Bumrah, even though Adam Zampa averages nearly 19 runs per wicket.

The fact that Mohammed Shami has picked up a wicket for every ten run scored makes him a deadly bowler for any team. If he can keep this going there is no doubt that the 33-year-old from India could very well bag the Player of the Tournament prize.
