Nathan Lyon's 3 best bowling figures in Test Cricket

Nathan Lyon began his career as a member of the ground-staff team but went on to become one of the finest off-spinners Australia have ever produced. Having represented Australia in all formats, Lyon cemented his place in the Test team. Earlier this year, he surpassed legendary bowler Shane Warne to become the highest non-Asian wicket-taker in the continent in the longest format.

Lyon has played 122 Test matches and has taken a whopping 496 wickets at an average of 31.01. The right-arm spinner has 23 five-wicket hauls and four 10-wicket hauls. As the veteran bowler celebrates his 36th birthday today (November 20).

Let’s look at his 3 best bowling figures in Test cricket:

3. 7/94 vs India

Nathan Lyon recorded his third-best bowling figures in Test cricket in the fourth match against India in Delhi in 2013. India were allowed to take just 10 10-run lead in the first innings as Lyon rattled the Indian batting unit with seven wickets. He took the wickets of four of India’s top five batters and vanquished the tailenders to finish the innings with figures of 7/94. However, the Australian batters failed to rise to the occasion and India won the match by 6 wickets as a result.

2. 8/64 vs India

In the 3rd Test at Indore in 2023, Australia registered a massive 9-wicket victory over India and Lyon was adjudged Player of the Match. The off spinner grabbed a total of 11 wickets in the game. India were aiming to score huge runs in the second innings after a poor first innings. However, they were stunned by Lyon as he tore through the line-up to pick up 8 wickets.

1. 8/50 vs India

Australia may have lost the second Test in Bengaluru in 2017, but Nathan Lyon shocked the Indian crowd by putting up a sensational display. On the back of his 8/50, the home team was bundled out for 189 runs in the first innings. However, Lyon went wicketless in the second innings and Indian batters managed to post a challenging target for the visitors. Ravichandran Ashwin’s six-wicket performance saw India bowl out Australia for 112 runs and claim a 75-run victory.
