Team India was reeling at 3/26 against Zimbabwe at Cuttack when Azhar stepped up to rescue his team. The Indian skipper built an unbeaten partnership with Ajay Jadeja to take India beyond the 300-run mark. Azhar ended up with 153 runs in the first innings which later proved to be a match-winning contribution.

The Indians were chasing a massive target of 303 runs against Sri Lanka in the first match of the ODI series at Colombo. The Sri Lankan bowlers exerted enormous pressure in the initial overs of the run chase with four quick breakthroughs. Team India lost key names like Tendulkar, Ganguly, and Dravid but the game was not yet over as Azharuddin stood tall in the middle order. His partnership with Ajay Jadeja kept the team in the run chase and almost took it home. Unfortunately, Team India lost the match by a narrow margin of 2 runs but Azharuddin made his presence felt with an extraordinary batting display.

Azhar scored another century against Sri Lanka in ODI cricket, in 1987. Both the teams reached Mumbai for the final match of the 5-match ODI series. India had an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series and the home team wanted to finish the series with another victory. The young Azharuddin made this task easy with his century in the first innings. His innings took India to a formidable total of 299 runs. In the end, India won the match and the youngster’s batting performance played a pivotal role in that victory.
