This was when we saw a peak of Mahela Jayawardene for the first time. This was against a mighty England pace attack as well with the likes of Darren Gough and Alan Mullaly. The England team put up a mammoth total and the Lankan innings was down to a young Jayawardene. He formed an important 120 runs to put Sri Lanka back into the chase and played a huge role in the thrilling one-wicket win.
