Though this ended in a losing cause, it was still a century to remember for every Lankan supporter.
2. 120 vs England in 1999
This was when we saw a peak of Mahela Jayawardene for the first time. This was against a mighty England pace attack as well with the likes of Darren Gough and Alan Mullaly. The England team put up a mammoth total and the Lankan innings was down to a young Jayawardene. He formed an important 120 runs to put Sri Lanka back into the chase and played a huge role in the thrilling one-wicket win. This was Jayawardene’s first ODI century as well where we were introduced to his grace and ability to play big innings.

This was one of the best Lankan innings we had ever witnessed in England and this was also the time when Jayawardene was in his usual run-making form in the season. This innings of 144 from 150 deliveries against an in-form England team was something to cherish for everyone. Jayawardene had opened the innings and made batting look easy on what is one of the toughest England wickets to bat on.
