Luke Wright’s top 3 batting performances in T20Is

England tasted glory for the first time in 2010 when they won their first T20 World Cup, marking their first major title. One of the crucial players in that World Cup-winning squad was Luke Wright. Moving further, let’s spotlight his top 3 batting performances in T20I cricket.

1. 99* vs Afghanistan, 2012

Luke Wright played his best knock in T20I cricket in the 2012 T20 World Cup against Afghanistan. The Afghans elected to field first after winning the toss, but their decision did not pay off. However, Afghanistan made a good start in the first innings by dismissing opener Craig Kieswetter in the very first over. Then it was Luke Wright’s turn to counter-attack, and he did exactly that. He smashed 99 runs off just 55 deliveries to propel his team to a challenging total of 196 runs at the end of the first innings. England won the match in the end by 116 runs, and Wright was adjudged the player of the match for his unbeaten knock.

2. 76 vs New Zealand, 2012

Luke Wright was in red-hot form in the 2012 T20 World Cup. Here is another show of class from him in that tournament. This knock was played against New Zealand in a group-stage encounter. In the first innings, New Zealand had accumulated 148 runs, which was not a massive total to chase but still a tricky one. England struggled to get off to a good start as they lost a couple of wickets with only 38 runs on the board. But Luke Wright’s perseverance paid off, and England won the match by 6 wickets.

3. 71 vs Netherlands, 2009

Interestingly, the majority of Luke Wright’s best batting performances in T20I cricket have come in the T20I World Cup. He scored these 71 runs against the Dutch in the 2009 T20 World Cup at the iconic Lord’s. England batted first in this match; however, the star-studded English batting unit had a tough time putting up runs against the Dutch bowling unit. Ultimately, it was Luke Wright whose vital knock carried England to 162 runs in the first innings. In the second innings, spectators at Lord’s saw history unfolding in front of their eyes as Netherlands chased the target to beat mighty England.
