IPL: Top 3 highest successful chases in Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali

IPL: Top 3 highest successful chases in Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali

The Indian Premier League (IPL) provides the best platform for players from all over the world to showcase their talent and at the same time it entertains lakhs of fans with high-scoring, low-scoring thrillers. The pace of the game usually depends on the type of surface, whether it favors the bowlers or supports the batters.

Punjab Kings’ home ground, Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, also known as Mohali Stadium is an excellent venue for cricket lovers. The pitch conditions here are ideal for batting, but second-batting teams have struggled while chasing big targets.

On that note let’s take a look at top three highest successful chases at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali.

3. 191 by Punjab Kings vs Deccan Chargers

In the 61st match of IPL 2012, Deccan Chargers batted first and posted a total of 190-4 in 20 overs, thanks to brilliant half-centuries from Shikhar Dhawan and Cameron Green. The veteran Indian batter scored 71 runs off 50 balls and the former Australia T20 captain 67 runs off 41 balls to help the Hyderabad-based franchise set a competitive target for the hosts.

No team had previously chased a target of more than 190 at the Mohali ground, and the visitors would have ended their first innings with a satisfied mind. However, there is always a first time, and that was the case with Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings), who made history by crossing the finish line in the final ball. Captain David Hussey’s outstanding 35-ball 65 and a quickfire knock from Gurkeerat Singh Mann helped them win the game.

2. 191 by Punjab Kings vs Royal Challengers Bangalore

The very next year after Punjab’s highest ever run chase, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) set a similar target for the hosts in Match 51 of the 2013 IPL. Asked to bat first, RCB posted 190-3 on the back of half-centuries from Cheteshwar Pujara and Chris Gayle and a brisk knock from AB de Villiers at the end of the innings.

The RCB bowlers started the second innings well, dismissing PBKS’ top-order batters for cheap runs. However, they  couldn’t stop a South African storm, David Miller, who single-handedly won the game for the home team. The ‘Killer Miller’ punished the bowlers, scoring 101 off 38 balls to record another epic chase for the Mohali-based franchise with two overs to spare.

3. 215 by Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings

It took ten years, but the Mumbai Indians (MI) set a new record for the highest-ever run chase at the Mohali stadium on May 3 in the ongoing edition of IPL 2023. Batting first, PBKS posted a huge score of 214-3 on the strength of Liam Livingstone’s 42-ball 82 and Jitesh Sharma’s 27-ball 49.

No one would believe that MI, who began their 2023 campaign on a bad note, would chase down this target. But the five-time champions created history by pulling off an incredible victory with seven balls to spare. Ishan Kishan (75 off 41 balls) and Suryakumar Yadav (66 off 31 balls) led from the front and announced their comeback in the season.
